Mahrez Fades as Algeria Suffers a Shocking Defeat to Tunisia

In the highly contested North African clash at the AFCON games, Tunisia came out on top to beat Algeria 2:1.

One of the tournament favorites, Algeria started off well with Islam Slimani’s point-blank header which forced an excellent save from Aymen Mathlouthi.

Riyad Mahrez also had a chance at goal with a shot from the edge of the area but the CAF Player of the Year was quiet for the most part of the game.

Tunisia took the lead when Algeria’s Aissa Mandi misdirected Youssef Msakni’s cross into his own net in the 50th minute. Algeria’s misfortunes continued when Sliti got a chance to score a second goal from a penalty kick.

Algerian defender, Ghoulam sent a weak header towards his own goal which found Khazri who then powered ahead of the former to win the ball, but was fouled in the box.

Tunisia continued to show the desire to bury the game as the Algerians despaired and seemed to have given up.

Algeria got a consolation goal through substitute Hanni who sent a curling shot into the corner beating Jridi. The Tunisian keeper came on in the 88th minute in place of an injured first-choice, Mathlouthi.

Tunisia’s victory gives three points and is in second place in Group B while Algeria, is with only one point.
