Liberia to Benefit from FIFA Talent Coach Program

Approximately 176 member associations (MAs) have enrolled in the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) since its launch in 2022, exceeding the program’s stated enrollment target of 150 for the year, according to FIFA.

Liberia is one of those MAs. The TDS provides MAs with specialized assistance to help them realize their full potential, continuing the steps taken to lessen the disparity in the standard of football between various regions of the world.

Its main objective is to raise the bar for men’s and women’s national teams globally, in line with FIFA’s commitment to long-term global talent development.

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has already rolled out the first edition of the TDS, with 34 talented players scouted from among nearly 2,000 players from 91 teams who participated in the TDS that started in December 2022.

FIFA Chief of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger says that by the end of 2027, FIFA hopes to have an elite talent development academy in each of the 211 FIFA MAs, in addition to supporting MAs in implementing the TDS. This will allow every promising player to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“To provide a solid technical basis for the development of the FIFA Academies, FIFA has already deployed 24 coaches to support the identification of talented players, and six more will soon follow, namely in Liberia, Malawi, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, and Ghana,” Mr. Wenger said at the FIFA Football Summit 2023 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The selected talent development coach that will be assigned to Liberia will be supported by full-time local coaches provided by the respective MA to ensure the project’s legacy by establishing a coaching talent pool in the country.

“Together, the coaches will implement the three key pillars of the initiative: find talented players, train them to give them the tools to best exploit their ability, and allow them to put what they have learned into practice by playing matches.”
