Burkina Faso Salvages Third Place at AFCON

Burkina Faso and Ghana had a chance to finish on a high in a third –place play-off after being eliminated by Egypt and Cameroon respectively during the AFCON semifinals.

Burkina Faso emerged third through an excellent Alain Traore goal – the only goal of the game. The free kick came with a few minutes to end of regular time and Traore made no mistake curling the ball into the top corner past Ofori.

Ghana were favorites to win this tie going into the game and they started off brightly only to be let down by Captain Emmanuel Badu who aimed his header wide.  Burkina Faso also got their chance through Prejuce Nakoulma but nothing came of it.

Ghana’s close chance came around the 25th minute when Jordan Ayew whipped a corner for Tekpetey who struck it against the bar. Their other chance was wasted when Tekpetey headed wide Ayew’s cross from the right.

And although the pitch was more of an obstruction to both teams as it was hard to dribble past opponents, Burkina Faso fought hard and managed to win the tie leaving Ghana empty handed.

Ghana finished 4th and Egypt and Cameroon will battle it out in the AFCON final later today.
