CECAFA Announces New Dates For CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers

The Council for East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) has rescheduled the CAF Women’s CAF Champions League qualifiers to begin on 28th August in Kenya.

Eight teams will take part in the event that was postponed few days before the kickoff in June because of logistical challenges.

The development means the women’s event becomes the first major football event to be staged in Kenya since the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020.

According to Cecafa Executive Director, Auka Gacheo , the event will take place in Nairobi with the matches being held at Moi International Sports Centre and Nyayo National Stadium.

“We have finally agreed with Football Kenya Federation on the new dates and the qualifiers will take place. We shall also re-do the draw to have two pools with four teams each,” said Gecheo.

The Football Kenya Federation announced in June that they would have to postpone the tournament because they were still waiting for financial assistance from Cecafa.

The tournament is also part funded by football’s world governing body, Fifa.

The 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League Cecafa Qualifier will see eight teams from the East and Central Africa region compete in two groups.

Kenyan champions Vihiga Queens were earlier pooled against Scandinavian (Rwanda), and FAD Club (Djibouti).

Other participating teams include Lady Doves (Uganda), PVP Buyenzi (Burundi), Simba Queens (Tanzania), Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Yei Join Stars (South Sudan), and New Generations FC (Zanzibar).
