Senegal v/s Cameroon: Match Preview

Senegal will take on Cameroon in today’s second quarter-final clash of the 2017 African Cup of Nations at Stade de Franceville, Franceville today.

Head to Head Encounters.

The two sides have so far met three times in the AFCON with each winning once and sharing the spoils in 2002 final.

Senegal however, leads in the overall head to head encounters winning five, drawing 5, and losing four. (W-5, D-5, L-4)

This will be an interesting encounter that will bring back memories from the 2002 AFCON final that was headlined by African legends like El Haji Diouf, Henry Camara, Rigobert Song, and Samuel E’to.

Both sides have been in tremendous form passing through their group Stages unbeaten. Senegal topped group B (the group of death) with two wins over Tunisia and Zimbabwe, and a draw against Algeria.

Meanwhile, Cameroon drew two against Burkina Faso and Gabon and won one against Burkina Faso to finish second in group A.

Players to Watch.

Sadio Mane – Senegal

The 24-year-old forward has been one of Senegal’s star player in the tournament – netting two goals in the group stages before being rested against Algeria’s Desert Foxes.

The Liverpool FC attacker will be keen to inspire the Lions of Teranga to victory over Cameroon in an attempt to clinch its first ever AFCON title.

Benjamin Moukandjo – Cameroon

The new Cameroon captain has proudly influenced his nation as one of the key attackers – having netted its first goal of the tournament against Burkina Faso.

The 28-year-old FC Lorient striker will be hoping to lead his nation to victory against Senegal as they eye a record fifth AFCON title.

Many pundits have not only put Senegal as favorites to win this encounter but to also win the tournament, however, the Cameroonians are not a side to write off easily.

They may not have exactly sent sparks flying in the competition but the fact each game has shown improvement, the Indomitable Lions will be formidable challengers in today’s game.
