Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp is now the new head coach of Ethiopian Premier League side St George FC.

After coaching spells in South Africa, Middendorp secures himself another job in Africa five weeks after leaving Premier Soccer League giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Middendorp parted ways with Amakhosi at the end of the season after he failed to deliver the 2019/20 Absa Premiership title despite leading Amakhosi in pole position for all of 28 rounds.

An announcement was made by Saint George on Thursday who confirmed the appointment of the German soccer coach.

“St George has appointed a new coach! Our Sports Association announces the new coach for the main team. Ernst Midderdorp has reached an agreement to train the club for three years,” the club posted on their social media pagesas translated from Amharic.

 

The well-travelled mentor spent one-and-a-half season with the Chiefs having previously coached the team between the years 2005 and 2007.

The 61-year-old, who has always had a strained relationship with the South African media, coached several other top-flight clubs in the republic and also Hearts of Oak in Ghana.

St George has already started rebuilding for the 2020/2021 season with the release of several senior players ahead of the new season that will kick off on December 3.

The Horsemen are the most successful team in Ethiopian Premier League history, having won the topflight a record 29 times.
