Equatorial Guinea Appoint New Head Coach

Equatorial Guinea have named Portuguese manager Jorge Costa as the new head coach of the senior national team on Thursday.

Equatorial Guinea have named Portuguese manager Jorge Costa as the new head coach of the senior national team on Thursday.

The Portuguese trainer, most recently coach of Mumbai City in India, succeeds Frenchman Sebastien Migne, whose contract was not renewed.

It will be the 48-year-old’s second time taking charge of a national team in Africa, having previously been in-charge of Gabon between 2014 and 2016.

His other former coaching jobs have been in Europe, the Middle East and in Tunisia with top-division side, CS Sfaxien.

In his first spell in charge of Gabon, the Panthers crashed out early at the 2015 African Cup of Nations after winning one and losing two of their group games.

His second spell was not also successful as he was fired just two months before the Central African nation hosted 2017 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

The length of Costa’s contract with Equatorial Guinea will be announced later this month.

Capped 50 times for Portugal, he spent most of his playing career with Porto.

His task will be to qualify Equatorial Guinea for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
