Lazare Bansse has been elected the new president of the Burkina Faso Football Federation after Saturday’s congress held in Bobo-Dioulasso.

Banse, who is president of Etoile Filante Ouagadougou, secured 94 voted from the 153 votes available to clinch victory in the first round.

His lone challenger Amado Traore received 59 votes in an elective general assembly that was for the first time held outside the country’s capital Ouagadougou.

In the run-up to the elections, Bansse had spoken about rebuilding Burkina Faso soccer from ‘grass roots level’ in his bid to restore the image of FBF.

Bansse now succeeds Sita Sangare for a four-year tenure. The outgoing president decided not to defend his seat saying ‘time has come for him to serve the country in other capacities.’

Burkina Faso play Malawi home and away in November as part of the qualifiers for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
