A Lagos court has ordered the arrest of former Nigerian national team captain Austin Okocha over tax evasion charges.

A Lagos court has ordered the arrest of former Nigerian national team captain Austin Okocha over tax evasion charges.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye issued the order against Okocha on Tuesday after he failed to appear for a case where he has been sued by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice for failing to pay his income taxes.

The charges were filed through its prosecutor, Jide Martins, in June 2017 and the suit began four months later but the defendant had failed to appear in court, according to Premium Times.

The charges are: “Failure to furnish a return of income for tax purposes with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service contrary to Section 94 (1) of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 (As Amended).”

“Failure to pay income tax contrary to Section 56(a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No. 8 of 2006.”

“Failure to furnish a return of Income for tax purposes with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service contrary to Section 94(1)of the Personal Income Tax Act Cap P8 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 (As Amended).

Hearing of the case continues on April 15, 2019.
