Doukha: Algeria Can Win Nations Cup

Goalkeeper Azzedine Doukha believes Algeria has the team to snatch the Nations Cup off the grips of champions Cameroon.

Goalkeeper Azzedine Doukha believes Algeria has the team to snatch the Nations Cup off the grips of champions Cameroon.

The Desert Foxes are the first to qualify from their group with ten points and play Gambia at home in a return-leg final qualifier.

And Saudi Arabia-based goalkeeper Azzedine thinks the North Africans can end their 29-year wait for the gold trophy in June.

“We are able to win this trophy because we have a very strong team,” the 32-year-old, capped ten times for Algeria, says.

The Chattia-born, who’d featured in ten straight games between the sticks for tenth-placed Saudi Premier League club Al Raed this season, insists the African Cup being hosted by neighboring Egypt will work the trick for their support base.

“Added to that, the fact that the tournament is being played in Egypt, it will promote the mass presence of our supporters, better than if it was in a distant African country,” he said.

Azzedine had been out frozen in the cold before Belmadi was appointed national team coach.

“My absence from the national team was due to a decision of the former coach, Rabah Madjer. He felt that the Saudi Championship was weak and, therefore, he did not appeal to me as Raïs Mbolhi. That was his point of view.”
