Kenyan defender Eric Ouma underwent successful surgery with his club AIK after suffering a fractured fibula while training on Friday, Ducor Sports can reveal.

The 23-year-old, signed to club AIK, underwent the surgery in a hospital in Sweden on Saturday afternoon and he is yet to be discharged after the operation to correct the injury.

This means Ouma will be set on the path of recovery to ensure he is fully fit to resume his career, with the coaches expecting to be out for a period of six to eight weeks.

Ouma underwent scans on Saturday to discover the extent of a worrying injury he suffered during the early Friday training before it was decided that he undergoes surgery.

He is expected to return to the treatment room after two weeks for the doctors to reassess the injury, though it appears that he might recover quicker than expected.

“I was sliding in an attempt to reach for a ball during training, but I, unfortunately, fell on my right leg with all the weight and fractured my fibula,” Ouma told reporters.

“It was a painful experience but I have already undergone surgery, on Saturday, and I am happy with the progress so far. I am hoping to recover within the eight weeks and get back to action,” he added.

The former Gor Mahia left-back has been a key figure for the national team and was part of the Harambee Stars side that took part in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualification and subsequent appearance in Egypt.

Ouma joined AIK in November 2019 from Swedish third-tier side Vasalund in a five-year deal becoming his fourth club in a career that was launched at Kakamega High School in 2014.
