Eric Rutanga: Rayon Defender Joins Police FC

Rayon defender Eric Rutanga has joined archrivals Police FC for an undisclosed fee after three seasons at Gikundiro.

Rayon defender Eric Rutanga has joined archrivals Police FC for an undisclosed fee after three seasons at Gikundiro.

The 27-year-old Rwandese international, whose contract was due to expire next summer, only made 15 appearances in the recently concluded season.

He played a total of 98 games for the club after joining in April 2016 and was a key member of the team that reached 2018 CAF Confederation Cup – the first and only time by any Rwandan team.

“Rutanga is now our player until 2022. We hope his quality and experience will add strength to the team,” Police Secretary-General, CIP Maurice Karangwa told reporters.

Rutanga was previously linked with a move to Yanga and Nkana with both sides becoming clear favourites to snap the Amavubi star.

The defender now becomes the fourth player to quit Rayon in the last two weeks, after the exit of Eric Iradukunda, goalkeeper Yves Kimenyi and Eric Irambona who crossed to SC Kiyovu.

Since joining Rayon from archrivals APR four years ago, Rutanga won two league titles, and one Peace Cup silverware among other titles.

The experienced centre-back is one of the most famous products of the Rwanda U-17 national team that participated in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
