Jesse Were Receives Late Kenya Call-Up for Ghana Showdown

Zesco United forward Jesse Jackson Were has received a late call-up to the Kenya national team as they prepare for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana in Accra.

Zesco United forward Jesse Jackson Were has received a late call-up to the Kenya national team as they prepare for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana in Accra.

The call-up became necessary after Kashiwa Reysol striker Michael Olunga sustained a hamstring injury during their last weekend match against Albirex Niigata in the Japanese League.

Sebastien Migne had earlier opted for Olunga but with the match a few days away, he could not risk waiting for a medical report on the extent of the player’s injury. Consequently, he decided to hand Jesse Were a late call-up into the squad.

29-year-old Jesse Were is expected to join the team in Nairobi on Saturday where they are set to camp before later traveling to Ghana for the clash.

Ghana will host Kenya on March 23rd at the Accra Sports Stadium in a match that will determine who finishes first or second in Group F of the qualifiers.

Kenya leads the table with seven points, three more than second-placed Ghana, while Ethiopia remains bottom of the group with a single point.

Harambee Stars will take part in the AFCON competition to be held in Egypt from June 21 to July 19 this year.
