Frenchman Jean-Michel Cavalli has agreed to become the new coach of Niger, according to the country’s football federation.

Cavalli met with the federation’s president Djibrilla Hima Hamidou in Niamey to discuss the terms and conditions for the coach’s contract.

The 61-year-old replaces Jean-Guy Wallemme who was asked to step down in November last year after Dama Gazelles’ 6-2 loss to Madagascar in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Niger Football Federation (FENIFOOT) has not released any details of his contract terms.

Cavalli was fired as Algerian national team coach in September 2007 after the North Africans failed to qualify for the finals of the 2008 Nations Cup.

His most recently managed Algerian club MC Oran and before that coached Al-Ittihad Alexandria, USM Alger, Al-Hilal, Lille, Racing Paris and Ajaccio in France and Ionikos in Greece.

He will be hoping to revive the fortunes of the national side and help them qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon and eventually the next World Cup finals in Qatar one year later.
