Equatorial Guinea Coach Stranded Due To Coronavirus Lockdown

Equatorial Guinea national team head coach Sebastien Migne is trapped in Malabo due to lockdown of international borders and the closing of major airports due to coronavirus outbreak.

In an interview with Spaniard outlet, Radio Macuto, the French coach said that he had been blindsided by the sudden travel restrictions and has been struggling for days, trying to find alternatives to re-join part of his family that lives in Nairobi.

“I am stuck here [Equatorial Guinea], like many French people abroad,” said Migne.

“And unfortunately, there is no longer an air link. I am especially concerned for my family, knowing that there are three young children, including my disabled older son.

“We do not know how we would react if there were respiratory problems due to the coronavirus. We know that healthcare in Africa is not the same as in Europe, so we are apprehensive and we would like to return to France.”

The 46-year-old had been preparing Equatorial Guinea for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya before the matches were called off by Confederation of African Football due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

“Until ten days ago, the qualifiers were to go on as planned but suddenly everything stopped. The country is practically paralyzed and the borders were closed for 30 days. Today, it is impossible to get to France, or Kenya, which might interest me because part of my family lives there,” he added.

Migne was appointed as Equatorial Guinea coach last November after signing an open contract in which any party is free to terminate the deal at any time after six months.

This was after breaking ties with Kenya in August last year having led the Harambee Stars to their first Nations Cup in 15 years.

Kenya missed out on a place in the last 16 of the 2019 Nations Cup in Egypt on goal difference.

Migne has also coached Congo Brazzaville worked with Claude Le Roy in Oman, Syria and DR Congo.
