Egypt To Host 2020 African Super Cup

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Friday that the African Super Cup will be played in Egypt instead of Qatar.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Friday that the African Super Cup will be played in Egypt instead of Qatar.

The Super Cup pits the winners of the African Confederation Cup against that of the African Champions League winners.

The one-off game was initially slotted to be held in Qatar between14-16 August 2020 but it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

CAF had signed a three-year deal with Qatar Football Association allowing the Middle East to host the tournament.

“This year’s edition will be held in Cairo, Egypt,” read a statement published on the CAF official website on Friday.

“CAF will work closely with the Host Association to make the 2020 Total CAF Super Cup a success,” the African football governing body added in their statement.

African Confederation Cup winners RS Berkane of Morocco will meet with the winner of the African Champions League final between Ahly and Zamalek.

Ahly hold the record for the most African Super Cup wins with six titles, followed by fellow Cairo-side Zamalek with four titles.

Since the first-ever Super Cup match was played in January 1993, it has only been four times that the Champions League winners have ended up on the losing side, with those occasions coming in 1993, 1998, 2012 and 2020.

On all of the other 22 finals, the Champions League holders have dominated the tie, and it is that fact which swings the pendulum in favor of the winner of the clash between Zamalek and Al Ahly.
