Zimbabwe PSL Champions To Be Decided On Final Day

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League winner is set to be decided on final day when FC Platinum face Caps United at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League winner is set to be decided on final day when FC Platinum face Caps United at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Platinum are in control of the table after beating Black Rhinos by a solitary goal in the round of 33 match played on Wednesday, to climb to the summit of the log.

Lizwe Sweswe’s men are favourites to retain the title as they have a one-point lead over Caps who suffered a 3-2 loss this afternoon at the hands of Ngezi Platinum in a match played at Baobab Stadium.

Platinum, on 59 points, have won their last six Premiership matches to wipe a nine-points lead for Caps and are on brink of becoming the first team to win three consecutive titles since Dynamos in 2014.

The team is riding high on confidence after reaching their second consecutive Africa Cup Champions League group stages, despite 3-0 loss to Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia over the weekend.

“We can’t be stuck in the past. This is a completely different match which comes with a different approach,” said coach Sweswe as he prepared to welcome Rhinos at Masava which could have been troublesome.

“Unlike in the Champions League where we have chances to recover, it’s different with this one. If we lose the game we are doomed.”

Darlington Dodo’s Caps, with 58 points, have recovered from mid-season stumble to record six consecutive victories prior to their loss to Ngezi and are agonisingly close to their sixth title.

The Green Machine would have been crowned champions if they won against Ngezi but that was only if FC Platinum failed to win against Black Rhinos at Mandava.

Statistics did not look favourable for Caps as they had lost all of their last three encounters to Ngezi by a 2-1 scoreline.

The last time they tasted victory against Ngezi was at Rufaro two years ago when they walloped them 3-0 with the reverse fixture at the Baobab ending in a 2-2 stalemate.

In 2016, the Green Machine overcame Ngezi 1-0 in Harare, but they could not be separated in the reverse fixture at the Baobab. They drew one-all.

“As far as we are concerned, we are looking into the future. That is all history; we are focused on winning the league title,” Dodo said before the match against Ngezi.

Despite the fact that Dodo will most probably tell the players to enjoy the match, make no mistake, he will be demanding a win, which is no picnic against FC Platinum.
