Zesco Release Kenyan Striker John Makwatta

Zambian Super League champions Zesco United have confirmed that they have released one of their strikers as they continue to shape for the new season.

The clubs have confirmed that have reached agreement to release Harambee Stars striker John Makwatta from his contract.

The 25-year-old Makwatta joined the Team Ya Ziko in February 2020 from Kenyan Premier League side AFC Leopards after a short stint with Kuwait’s Al-Nasr AC.

He has been offloaded despite having two years remaining in his contract so as to pave way for a new foreign player.

“We have reached an agreement with Makwatta to separate mutually. I wish to thank him for his services and his contribution towards the team’s title triumph this season,” said Zesco United Chief Executive Officer, Richard Mulenga.

It is not yet known what next for Makwatta, who made his international debut in a match against Tanzania on 29 May 2016 at Moi International Stadium Kasarani.

However, various reports indicate that he could be headed for Tanzania Premier League giants Yanga who are set to release Burudian international Fiston Abdoul Razak.

Yanga are currently second on the the 18-team table on 70 points from 32 matches and look set to represent Tanzania in next season’s African Champions League.
