Zamalek Sail Though to CAF Champions League Group Stage

Zamalek sailed through to the group stages of the CAF Champions League after thrashing Tusker FC 4-0 in Cairo in a first-round, second leg match at Borg El-Arab on Friday.

The White Knights wrapped a 5-0 aggregate win courtesy of Morsy Fayed’s brace and a goal each from Seifeddine Jaziri and Achraf Bencharki.

Having won 1-0 away, Zamalek made it difficult for their opponents to come back and threatened to take the lead courtesy of dangerously looking attempts by Tarek Ahmed, Fayed and Jaziri.

Tusker continued to play second fiddle and they went down on the 10th minute when Fayed headed home into an empty net.

The Brewers nearly had the equaliser within minutes off a back-post attempt by Kalos Kilenge, but Elwenesh made an emphatic goal-line clearance.

The White Knights made it two goals on the 18th minute when Jaziri capitalized on Patrick Matasi error to nod home into an empty net.

More chances came Zamalek way as halftime loomed with Fatooh blazing a first-time shot on the edge of the area before Zizo had a look in at the other end.

The second half started off with Apollo Atieno nearly grabbing one for Tusker as the winger tried to catch Gabal off his line but the winger’s lobbed effort sailed over the bar.

Eugine Asike tried his luck from range three minutes later but the Brewers skipper fired his effort high over the bar.

Zamalek then made a change, team captain Shikabala coming on the White Knights’ striking force was revived.

The White Knights extended their lead on the 72nd minute courtesy of Achraf Benchariki who capitalized on another goalkeeping error by Matasi

Boniface Muchiri came close in the 75th minute with a shot from distance but Gabal managed to tip the striker’s effort over the bar.

Morsy then completed the rout ten minutes from time off an assist by Gomaa,  with the later having earlier been denied by the post after coming on as a substitute.
