Zamalek coach Christian Gross has expressed his delight at his side’s progression to the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup finals.

Zamalek coach Christian Gross has expressed his delight at his side’s progression to the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup finals.

The White Knights and Etoile du Sahel played out an entertaining but goalless outing at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse, Tunisia, on Sunday to book a place in the finals.

This is the first time Zamalek have reached the final of the competition with a 1-0 aggregate win, as they had won the semis’ first leg 1-0 in Alexandria a week ago.

In an interview, Gross, who masterminded the feat is a happy man and heaped praise on his charges adding that they deserve their place in the final.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “We knew in advance that it wasn’t going to be easy to qualify against Etoile du Sahel as they are a very good team. I’m happy that the goal we scored in Egypt gave us the qualification.”   [/perfectpullquote]

“I have to be fair, tonight we needed a bit of luck but we defended like lions tonight. I’m very happy for the players and our fans this evening,” he said.

In the match, their Tunisia opponents dominated possession from early on but struggled to create clear chances.

Zamalek were defensive but looked more dangerous whenever they broke forward on the counter-attack and they had chances in both halves.

The Cairo giants will meet Morocco’s RS Berkane in a two-legged final set to be played on the Sundays of May 19 and 26.

The Cairo giants have won the elite Champions League five times but have never won Africa’s secondary club competition.
