Youth Games: Zambia Grabs Silver in Hockey After Losing Final to South Africa

Zambia men’s hockey team win silver at the Hockey Africa Youth Games.

Zambia men’s hockey team on yesterday walked away with a silver medal after losing to South Africa in the finals of the Hockey Africa Youth Games currently taking place in Algeria.

South Africa scored an early goal before a late strike by Andrew Moyo forced the game to post-match penalties. The Rainbow Nation however proved to be the better team on the day, winning gold in the end.

Despite the loss, Zambia qualified to the  Youth Olympic Games scheduled for Argentina in October alongside champions South Africa.

Meanwhile in Athletics, sprinter Mingilishi Niddy got herself a bronze medal after finishing third in the finals of the 400m dash while Kennedy Luchembe qualified for the 400m finals but will only compete on Friday July 27th.

Zambia has so far secured 3 medals which includes a silver in swimming won by 15-year-old swimmer Mia Phiri who came second in the 50m backstroke, recording Zambia’s first medal – bronze in athletics and silver in hockey.

The African Youth Games (AYG) targets the 14 to 18 age group and helping in contributing to the development of African sport and to the growth of Olympic values, as well as act as a trial run for the Olympic Games.
