William Jebor Named Liberia New Captain

Striker William Jebor has been named the captain of the Liberia National team.

William Jebor has been named the captain of the Liberia National team ahead of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers match against DR Congo at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

National team head coach Thomas Kojo disclosed at a pre-match press conference, that he named the Wydad Athletic Club striker skipper of the team based on his leadership ability and his outstanding performance.

“For the length of time I have worked with Jebor, it’s unbelievable when it comes to his good character. During such a transitional period in our national team, we need a leader that the younger players can follow, and Jebor is the right person to serve as the captain,” coach Kojo said.

Kojo, who will be providing guidance from the sidelines in his first competitive match on Sunday, said his decision followed consultation with former skipper Anthony Laffor who has agreed to play an advisory role on the team as a senior player without wearing the armband.

Newly appointed captain Jebor remains the fans favorite with a lot expected from him in tomorrow’s encounter, but the 26-year-old skipper said he remains focused.

He said he doesn’t feel under pressure for Sunday’s clash, but he is going to deliver his normal style of play as he does in every game.

“I take my game minute by minute, I cannot promise heavenly glory, but I can only promise that we are going to work as a team to achieve victory, and to achieve that, we all are going to work in our respective departments to get the best result,’ Jebor said.

Prior to departure to Liberia for tomorrow’s match, Jebor helped his club Wydad to advance to the final round of the Throne Cup, beating hosts Al Kawkab Marrakech 2-1 on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at the Grand Marrakesh Stadium.

Liberia is at the bottom of Group G following their 3-0 loss away to Zimbabwe in Harare in June of last year. In Group G other match, leaders Zimbabwe will play away against Congo Brazzaville tomorrow at the Stade Alphonse Massemba-Débat in Brazzaville.
