Trouble Mounts for Nigeria’s Defending Champions

Previous league winners Enugu Rangers, face a worrying dip in form with the club now shockingly battling to stay up the division as relegation stares the Flying Antelopes in the face, amidst a string of poor displays.

The club has managed a mere ten wins in possibly thirty-one games, drawing nine times and losing a whopping twelve games.

The result leaves them garnering a return of thirty-nine points with a worryingly very kamikaze-like defensive line, letting in thirty-seven goals, seven more than the total thirty goals the club’s striking force has scored collectively.

Disenchantment is inevitably etched on the faces of supporters with the sacking and subsequent arrest of coach Imama Amapakabo only adding to an already frosty season.

Amapakabo is at logger’s heads with the club’s board who ordered for his brief detention for failing to hand over car keys belonging to the side entrusted to him while he was still coach, a move caused by the rise in outstanding wages owed to him.

The drama comes in much as an unwanted source of distraction and at a time the side is being beset by a poor run of streaks with the Flying Antelopes’ latest result falling to a 2-0 defeat to fellow strugglers, ABS.

Trouble-dogged Rangers must now win the remaining five games while hoping either Shooting Stars or Wikki Tourist drop points, so as to be assured of safety.

In other games, Rivers United heaped three goals past Wikki Tourist while Kano Pillars beat bottom-placed Remo Stars 2-0.

Shooting Stars pulled off a surprise win over fourth-placed Enyimba as Ifeanyi Ubah drew Gombe United two-all.

Niger Tornadoes also tied with Abia Warriors on a goalless result while SunShine Stars labored past El Kanemi Warriors 1-0.

Over to the Aper Aku Stadium, table-toppers Plateau United was made to drop two points after a 0-0 stalemate against Lobi Stars 0-0. They however still remain top of the standings with five points between them. Second-placed Akwa United thumped Nasarawa United 2-1.
