Togo Open Contract Renewal Talks With Claude Le Roy

Togo Football Federation (FTF) have commenced contract extension talks with their coach Claude Le Roy.

Togo Football Federation (FTF) have commenced contract extension talks with their coach Claude Le Roy.

The 71-year-old’s current contract with 2013 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finalists expires in April but the football governing body is keen to extend that arrangement for another year.

The move comes amid criticisms from soccer fans and administrators for Togo’s poor performance in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against lowly ranked Comoros and Kenya.

“We are in discussions with him about a one-year extension‚” disclosed a top official.

“He has earned (the right) to be offered an extension and we would like to improve it‚ but everything is in his hands.”

The Frenchman, who has worked on the continent for almost 30 years and has coached at a record nine Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, was appointed as Togo coach in April 2016.

Last year, Togolese fans held protests calling for the sacking of Le Roy for failing to qualify the national team to the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament, but the FTF decided to stand with him.

Togo currently sit at the bottom of Group G of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with only one point after their first two matches against Comoros and Kenya.

Only the top two teams from each of the 12 groups will make the finals in Cameroon in 2021.
