Sundowns Agree To a ‘Deal In Principle’ To Sign Kenyan Defender

South Africa Premier Soccer League giants Mamelodi Sundowns are set to add more gloss on their backline by agreeing to a deal in principle to sign Brian Onyango.

South Africa Premier Soccer League giants Mamelodi Sundowns are set to add more gloss on their backline by agreeing to a deal in principle to sign Brian Onyango.

The former Maritzburg defender was spotted at the Brazilians headquarters a few days after being controversially unveiled at Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) FC.

According to sources at the Chloorkop-based outfit, Sundowns have offered a two-year contract and will be added to the long list of new arrivals.

“It is true, Onyango has reached an agreement with Sundowns and soon the club will make it official,” the source told Ducor Sports.

“He is just waiting for the team to honour certain conditions but it is not a big deal, the most important thing is that they have reached an agreement.”

Onyango has been playing in South Africa since 2012 when he was signed by former PSL champions Santos from Kenyan outfit Tusker FC.

He was snapped by Maritzburg in 2015 and played for the side until the end of last season after establishing himself as one of the PSL top defenders.

The Kenyan international is expected to replace Wayne Arendse who is rumoured to be on his way out as Sundowns look to get ready to stock more in the backline.

The 26-year-old player was previously linked with Mamelodi Sundowns when he was still contracted to Maritzburg United.

He had publicly indicated his preference to move to the PSL champions but they were unwilling to pay the release clause.

Onyango is currently part of the Kenya squad that will face Comoros in the back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November.
