Stakes Raised as Teams Fight for the Last AFCON Qualification Spots

African teams will this weekend be fighting to secure the final spots in the biggest football event on the continent. The winners of each group will join Gabon which qualified automatically as hosts of the tournament.

Among the 52 teams that entered the draw, ten have already qualified meaning the rest will be fighting for the remaining six spots in the tournament. The teams that have qualified include Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, Senegal, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Zimbabwe, and Mali which all proceed as their respective group winners.

The surprise team of the campaign so far has been Guinea-Bissau who against all the odds qualified for their first ever AFCON. They overcame all their internal Football Federation challenges. Nigeria on the other hand, notwithstanding their star-studded team, have only managed a disappointing two points from three games.

Uganda, who last participated in the Nations Cup in 1978 will be looking for a win to qualify, and the Central African Republic is hoping to upset Congo in their final group game.

Also, Tunisia and Liberia will battle it out for spot.

Below are the current table standing and the final qualification games for AFCON Gabon 2017.
