Rohr: The Fittest Team Will Win AFCON

Nigeria national team coach Gernot Rohr believes the African Cup of Nations will be won by the fittest team in the competition.

The 2013 champions head to Egypt looking to reclaim the title that’s currently being held by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the German tactician stated that fitness will be a key factor in the tournament.

“We have to be fit because only the fittest team have the chance to win the Nations Cup,” he said.

He also added that expansion of the tournament will be more demanding meaning the fittest sides will be in a position to win the competition.

“It will be very hot and there will be more games (with the expanded format of the tournament) to be played after a tough, long season for many of the players,” he added.

Nigeria is pooled in group D alongside Burundi, Madagascar and Guinea.
