Rigobert Song Appointed New Cameroon Coach

The Cameroon Football Association has appointed Rigobert Song as new head coach of the Indomitable Lions.

Song, who is a former U-23s head coach, replaces Antonio Conceicao, who two days ago reached a decision with the country’s football governing body to leave the position on mutual consent.

The 45-year-old, Song was confirmed by a press release by the Cameroon’s Ministry of Sports that also indicated that the former Indomitable Lions captain will be assisted by Frenchman Sébastien Migné.

Song played 137 times for his country and had spells with English clubs Liverpool and West Ham.

His first competitive match in charge will be the double confrontation against Algeria for the play-offs of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His first coaching role came with Chad national team between 2015 and 2016, a job that  he took without any managerial experience.

Song made his international debut against Mexico in 1993 and went on to captain Cameroon for 10 years until Eto’o took on the role in late 2009.

He retired from international football in 2010 after playing at the World Cup in South Africa – the only time the tournament has been held on the continent.
