Herve Rugwiro will captain Rayon Sports the 2020/21 season, the club has revealed. The defender replaces Eric Rutanga who left the club last month to join local rivals Police FC.

The former APR central defender joined the club from APR as a free agent in July 2019. He says he is delighted to be named the captain of the record Rwanda Premier League champions.

“It is a great honour to be given the captaincy responsibility,” Rugwiro told reporters.

Rugwiro was earlier last month linked with a move out of Rayon with various reports indicating that he had agreed to terms with SC Kiyovu.

Described by many as the heart of Rayon’s defence, Rugwiro has featured for the national teams at different levels in the last decade, from the U-17 team and U-20 to U-23 and the senior Amavubi team.

He has represented the country in several regional and international competitions, such as CECAFA Senior Challenge, African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers and FIFA World Cup qualifiers, among others.

He was part of Amavubi national team squad that played in the 2016 and 2018 CHAN final tournaments in Rwanda and Morocco, respectively.
