Kabaso Chongo has signed a contract extension with TP Mazembe that will keep him in Lubumbashi until the summer of 2023.

The Zambian left-back contract was due to expire in July but the club has moved quickly to tie him down to a longer stay.

TP Mazembe have confirmed on their official portal the decision to extend the former Konkola Mine Police player’s stay with them.

“We have reached an agreement to extend by three years the contract of Chongo,” the club said.

Speaking on penning the new deal, Congo said: “I am very delighted to extend my stay here, I have always wanted to stay and continue to help this great team.

“It is a good chance for me to continue helping them [Mazembe] and I will do my best to make sure they win trophies.”

The Zambia national team captain was quick to play down speculation of a rumoured move to Belgium.

“I’ve seen as many articles linking me with a couple of clubs in Belgium,” said Chongo, expressing his bemusement at the interest shown from fans of his potential suitors. “I don’t understand this infatuation.”

The 28-year-old has scored 21 goals in 100 appearances for the Ravens since signing his first deal with the club in October 2013.

The Democratic of Congo top flight was shut down on May 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Mazembe seven points clear of AS Vita at the top of the table.
