Own Goal Sends Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations Final

Dylan Bronn scored into his own net during extra time, giving Senegal a 1-0 victory over Tunisia in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final on Sunday.

The decisive goal came when Carthage Eagles custodian Mouez Hassen fumbled a free-kick delivery which came in from Senegal’s right, pushing the ball into Bronn, who diverted it into his own net.

Tunisia had a chance to win the game in the normal time but Ferjani Ssasi placed his shot wide from a close range pushing the game into the extra time.

In the first half, the match was characterized by wasteful play. Senegal dominated possession, creating clear cut opportunities that were not converted into goals.

Tunisia were outplayed by the Senegalese in almost all the departments and had to sit back hoping to launch counter-attacks but nothing came out.

Few moments the half-hour, Henri Saivet put Mane through, but the Liverpool striker was closed down by the busy Moez Hassan and put the ball over the crossbar.

Alfred Gomis was seeing precious little action in the Senegal goal but had to be alert at his near post when Youceff Msakni had a breakaway half-chance from close range in the 36th minute.

Senegal continued to be the aggressors in the second period and Mbaye Niang was denied by Hassen who reacted well to stop the youngster follow-up challenge on the ball almost on the goal line.

Tunisia nearly took a surprise lead in the 66th minute when the ball broke to Oussama Haddai in the penalty area before Gomis dived low to his right to stop his effort across the goal.

The Carthage Eagles then earned a penalty in the 73rd minute after Koulibaly’s handball in the area, but Sassi failed to capitalise through a strong save from Gomis.

Senegal were also given a penalty five minutes later after a foul on Sarr and Hassan outdid his opposite number with a one-handed save from Henri Saivet.

Tunisia were motivated by the vocal supporters and had an opportunity to take the lead when Ssasi took a shot, only to see Gomis fingertip the effort over the bar in the 88th minute.

Opportunities were rare to come in the opening minutes of the extended time but Senegal had their own coming on 100 minutes after Dylan Bronn cushioned the ball into his own net after Hassan failed to parry from a free-kick.

Tunisia tried to get a consolation, but their attempts from Mohamed Dager and Taha Khenissi went wide of goal.

Chances from both sides in the second part were few and far between as the game ended 1-0 in favour of Senegal.
