Nigerian League: Plateau Spanks Akwa to Consolidate Lead at Summit

Three unanswered goals worked the magic for Nigerian League’s table-toppers Plateau, against Akwa United on Sunday.

Plateau United Football Club of Jos looks set to defy all odds this season by scooping the title.

They sit at the table top of the Nigerian Professional Football League, five points ahead of second-placed Mountain of Fire and Miracles who had their Sunday game with Rivers United put off due to the CAF Confederations Cup.

The current table log puts Plateau United in a temporary comfortable position and the 1999 Nigerian FA Cup winners consolidated their lead with an impressive 3-0 win over fourth-placed Akwa United in front of a 15,000 capacity-seater, at the multi-purpose Rwang Pam Stadium.

In another Sunday league encounter, third-placed Enyimba proved too strong for mid-table occupants Niger Tornados, beating them 3-0 at the Enyimba International Stadium.

Elsewhere, Gombe United added to its chances of surviving relegation after brushing past a shocked El Kanemi Warriors, with a 2-0 win.

It was also a similar score for Abia Warriors against Nasarawa United while Sun Shine breezed past ABS in a six-goal-thriller duel to end the game 4-2, at the llorin Township Stadium.

Wikki Tourists made a light work of Kano Pillars trouncing them 2-0 with Enugu Rangers adding to Shooting Stars’ woes who face relegation after drawing one-all.

Lobi Stars had a bad day in office losing narrowly 2-1 to Katsina United.

Table basement occupants Remo Stars had their game with Ifeanyi Ubah called off after some of their players suffered from food poisoning.
