Azam goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya has been recalled to Uganda squad by caretaker coach Abdallah Mubiru, more than five years after his last international appearance.

Azam goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya has been recalled to Uganda squad by caretaker coach Abdallah Mubiru, more than five years after his last international appearance.

The 25-year-old custodian has been rewarded for his impressive performances in the Tanzanian Premier League, while two players from Uganda U-20 team, Garvin Mugweri Kizito and midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga, have been called up for the first time.

Wycombe Wanders’ forward Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru and Southend United defender Elvis Bwomono have also earned recalls for crucial 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Malawi.

Not many changes are in Mubirus’s squad from the team that reported for camp for the South Sudan matches in their last international assignment.

But there is no place in the 31-man squad for Brentford midfielder Jayden Onen or Paide Linnameeskond’s forward Edrissa Lubega.

Uganda Cranes are pushing for a ticket to the AFCON finals to be hosted by Cameroon next year.

They are second in group B on seven points, one less than group leaders Burkina Faso who enjoy the top spot after four rounds of matches.

Uganda Cranes face leaders Burkina Faso on 24th March in Kampala before ending the campaign away against Malawi.
