Mahmoud Hamdy’s Late Goal Secures Point For Zamalek

Mahmoud Hamdy struck at stoppage time to hand Egyptian giants Zamalek a 2-2 draw against Petro de Luanda in the two sides 2021/2022 CAF Champions League Group D opener.

Petro were taking the game to their opponents in the opening exchanges and should have taken the lead after two minutes when Jaredi corner from the left was wastefully headed over by an unchallenged Azullao from point-blank range.

Zamalek gradually clawed their way back into the contest and responded when Ahmed Zizo cut onto his left from the right-hand side and put the ball on a plate for Seifeddine Jaziri with the cross but the Pharaohs striker glanced across the face of goal and out for a corner kick.

The White Knights were made to pay for their miss in front of goal when quick break out on the 22nd minute saw Gleison Moreira putting the ball beyond the reach of Mohamed Abou Gabal.

Zamalek looked to get back on level terms almost immediately, but Mohamed Ounajem was unable to fire past Wellington just moments after Ahmed Fattouh went close.

Petro extended their lead on the 35th minute when Victor Pedro Nanque found a pocket of space outside the box, turned and fired a powerful effort into the bottom left-hand corner for his first goal of the campaign.

Zizo created another decent opportunity when the corner was played short to Ashour , who crossed into the box and Ashraf Bencharki rose highest in the Petro box but headed over the crossbar.

Patrice Carteron made a double attacking change at the halftime, as Youccef Obama replaced Mohamed Ounajen and Shikabala came on for Maged Rahman.

The change seemed to have a desired effect for Zamalek, as Youceff Obama pulled a goal back ten minutes into the second stanza with a beautiful strike in the box after a cross by Hamza Mathlouthi.

In the 57th minute  Vidinho unleashed a powerful shot on goal, but saw his effort well-saved by the Zamalek keeper.

Five minutes later  Azulao  met a cross with a powerful header, but his attempt went agonisingly wide of the goal.

With Petro  seemingly closing on a win, Zamalek managed to snatch the equaliser in the 90+5 minute as Mahmoud Magdy turned home a cleaver pass from Razak Cisse to ensure his side walk away with a point.
