A local coach Paul Nkata, overseeing Kenyan Premier League Kakamega Homeboyz, has reportedly fled amid claims he placed bets and paid players to lose games.

Nkata is said to have gone AWOL even as his struggling side file out for Kenyan Premier League action on Wednesday night against Bandari.

Homeboyz have managed to churn out just a solitary victory in their last eight outings and the heat might have contributed to Nkata leaving his duty post.

Nkata ‘disappeared’ from his duty post on Monday, turned his mobile phone off and missed training sessions, leaving the KPL side to go into a match on Wednesday night against Bandari without him.

The 56-year-old has not been seen since Monday morning, which, according to reports, he apparently held talks with a small selection of fans after training.

However, according to our source, the coach is accused by the management of conniving with other members of the technical bench and gambling with the club’s premier league games.

The die in the wool added that before matches, Nkata agreed with some of his players to manipulate results to suit some betting companies he benefits from.

“We are shocked. We thought the poor run was just a normal one but we decided to do some investigations and we found out that our coach has been placing bets on games. He has been paying some of our players between 50,000-200,000 to lose games,” the source disclosed.

“We understand that he has traveled to Uganda. Someone tipped him and he decided to run away. It ’s a very sad situation,” the source added.

Some of the matches allegedly fixed according to our source are an away match to Sony Sugar and Mathare United played on January 2 and 19 respectively.

Sony edged out Homeboyz 2-1 in Awendo while Mathare triumphed 3-2 at Kasarani Stadium.

Veteran Kenyan international striker Allan Wanga and goalkeeper trainer David Juma have taken charge in an acting capacity.
