Kenya has suspended all sporting activities in the country due to the surging number of reported coronavirus cases.

The announcement was made by President Uhuru Kenyatta in a televised address made from State House, Nairobi.

It comes after the East African country witnessed escalation of coronavirus cases since the onset of the third wave in March.

Uhuru said the decision is in the interest of public safety and the protection of the people.

“That all sporting activities are hereby suspended, similarly operations of sporting and recreational facilities including members clubs are suspended until it is otherwise directed,” said Uhuru.

However, Harambee Stars trip to Togo for their last 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is not affected as the ban doesn’t international travels.

The 2021 Kenyan Premier League was almost nearing the end of the first leg with Tusker in the lead with 36 points followed by KCB (30) and AFC Leopards (29).

Kenyan football fraternity will be expecting the President to ease e the restrictions and allow sports activities to resume probably after the next 30 days.

Athletic Kenya has since announced the cancellation of the World Relay Championships planned for Saturday.
