Kaizer Chiefs To Play Moroccans In Egypt

The African Champions League Group C match between Kaizer Chiefs and Wydad Casablanca will be played in Egypt, Ducor Sports reveals.

The Reds confirmed on Monday that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation had successful talks with the Egyptian Football Federation, who gave consent for the match to be played in Cairo at a date to be confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Wydad Casablanca forced the postponement of the Kaizer Chiefs match, which was scheduled at the Mohamed V Stadium on 13 February, following the country’s Covid-19 restrictions.

Kaizer Chiefs were denied into Morocco by the North African country’s authorities due to the new coronavirus variant in South Africa.

CAF has now given the contest for the match to be played in Egypt where they are more lenient to Covid-19 protocols regarding to travelers coming from South Africa.

“We end to let the generous friendly fans know that it has been decided to hold the match between Wydad and South African side Kaizer Chiefs at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo,” read a statement on Wydad’s Facebook page.

“The Wydad Sports Administration extends its heartfelt thanks to Faouzi Lakjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, who spared no effort to find a neutral stadium that could host the match, as it intensified its contacts, even though the (CAF) gave the club only 24 hours to determine a new venue for the match…”

Chiefs were to jet out of Johannesburg heading to North Africa via Western Asia, flying from O.R Tambo International and should reach the Moroccan city on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday afternoon.

CAF appears to be finding a way for Amakhosi to be reimbursed after indicating those costs could be covered in a letter sent to South Africa Football Association.

Meanwhile, CAF is expected to announce the new date for the match as the South African FA is still in discussion with Chiefs over a suitable time to travel.
The trip to Casablanca is Amakhosi’s second to Morocco as they previously faced Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League First Round in 2015.
