Jwaneng Galaxy Crowned Botswana Champions After League Cancellation

Botswana club Jwaneng Galaxy were declared champions of the 2019/2020 BTC Premier League following a decision by the nation’s football federation on Sunday to end the domestic football season.

Botswana club Jwaneng Galaxy were declared champions of the 2019/2020 BTC  Premier League following a decision by the nation’s football federation on Sunday to end the domestic football season.

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) took the decision in light of the disruptions to the season occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The BFA’s National Executive Committee announced the decision in statement indicating that the decision was taken unanimously by all members present at meeting held at the federation headquarters in Gaborone.

“The 2019 /2020 Football season is concluded with the league table as is. The effect is that the team at the summit is crowned champions and the teams at the bottom of the table will relegate,” read part of the statement.

Jwaneng Galaxy topped the table with 41 points having played 20 matches while Township Rollers and Orapa United were second and third on 40 and 39 points respectively.

In the process, Jwaneng Galaxy will represent Botswana in the Africa Champions League next year with second-placed Rollers participating in the Confederation Cup.

Meanwhile, Molepolole City Stars and Miscellaneous have been relegated to the second-tier.

Masitaoka and Sua Flamingoes have both been promoted to the Botswana Premier League while four other clubs will participate in a playoff before the start of the next season to determine the third team to be promoted.
