Joseph Okumu: Gent Sign IF Elfsborg Defender On Four-year Deal

Kenyan defender Joseph Okumu has officially been unveiled at Belgian First Division side KAA Gent FC on a four-year deal.

Okumu finally completed the big switch from Swedish top tier club IF Elfsborg rumored to be in the region of USD 4million.

“Joseph Okumu (26 May 1997) today [Monday] signed a contract until 2025. With the arrival of the 24-year-old Kenyan, we are strengthening our defence,” said the statement on the club website.

Okumu has played for Kenya  U23 side and was a regular in Sebastien Migne’s 2019 Africa Cup of Natopna  (AFCON) squad in Egypt.

His role became important after Brian Mandela got injured during a pre-season training camp in France.

Okumu started his career at Kenyan Premier League side Chemelil Sugar after completing his high school education from Kakamega High School.

He remained at the sugar millers for only six months before venturing outside the country where he joined Free State Stars of South Africa.

He left for the USA and joined AFC Ann Arbor in 2018 before leaving for his former club Real Monarchs.

The youngster was later snapped by IF Elfsborg in August 2019.He was instrumental in helping the club to qualify for the Europa League after finishing second in the Swedish Allsvenskan.
