Gonçalves Takes Over As Mozambique Coach

Portugal’s Horácio José Paredes Mota Gonçalves has been appointed as the new head coach of Mozambique’s national team.

The Mozambique Football Association (FMF) announced the appointment of Gonçalves in Maputo on Friday.

Gonçalves replaces Luís Gonçalves who was sacked from the post in March following Mozambique’s failure to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 53-year-old has coached several clubs, including Mozambique giants Costa do Sol. He won 2019 Mocambola League with do Sol.

The Mambas will be his first national team coaching job as his former positions have been with clubs in Portugal and Greece.

Gonçalves will be assisted by Victor Matine, Adilson Sataca and goalkeepers coach Helder Cossa.

Mozambique football authorities have stressed that Gonçalves’ main tasks is to qualify Mozambique to African Nations Championship CHAN 2022 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

“I recognize that this is a big challenge, and I am prepared to do my best. It is an ambitious project and I count on all the stakeholders to perform it together. I thank Costa do Sol who accepted that I take on a new project,” Gonçalves said in his acceptance speech.
