Gabon Launch Search for New National Team Coach

Gabon’s Football Federation (Fegafoot) officially launched its search for a new national team coach on Thursday following the sacking of Daniel Cousin on March 28.

Gabon’s Football Federation (Fegafoot) officially launched its search for a new national team coach on Thursday following the sacking of Daniel Cousin on March 28.

Gabon, who sacked Cousin and dissolved the entire team after they failed to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, advertised the position on their website.

The central-African nation, which hosted the last finals in 2017, surprisingly finished third in Group C behind group leaders Mali and second-placed Burundi who qualified for the continental event for the first time in history.

As the head coach, Cousin recorded two wins against South Sudan – home and away- lost to Mali at home before registering a draw against Burundi in the last game.

Fegafoot says it is open to looking at applications from a foreign coach – not just native Gabonese – and has given a deadline of 22nd April for applications to be submitted.

The federation also outlines an intriguing list of requirements for anyone hoping to become the next Gabon coach.

On a professional level, knowledge of African football is required as well as football coaching certificates and experience in coaching elite football clubs.

A shortlist of three candidates will be finalized by an appointed commission before a successful coach and assistants will be announced.
