Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola Wins Marathon Gold At World Athletics Championships

Ethiopia has scored its second marathon title since 2001 with Tamirat Tola placing first at the World Athletics Championship in Hayward Field, Eugene.

Tola clocked 2hr 05min 36sec to win gold,smashing the previous best of 2:06.54 set by Kenyan Abel Kirui in Berlin in 2009.

The 30-year-old Tola  placed ahead of his compatriot Mosinet Geremew and Belgium’s Bashir Abdi. Geremew was 66secs slower than Tola, with Abdi three seconds behind Gerenew’s time.

Tola’s win brings the  second world championship marathon gold for Ethiopia in 20 years.

Kenya’s Kamworor came home a distant fifth in 2:07:14 with Canadian Cameron Levins pipping him in the final 50m for fourth in 2:07:09.
