End Of The Road For Giant Killers Marumo Gallants

TP Mazembe qualified for the group stages of the Confederation Cup after sealing a 1-0 aggregate win over Marumo Gallants in their play-off round tie.

Gallants were close to getting needed result in the first leg, but they lost 1-0 after skipper Lehlohonolo Nonyane scored an own goal.

The South Africans had qualified to play-off round after stunning DR Congolese giants AS Vita Club 3-2 winners on aggregate.

The opening 20 minutes proved to be a lively affair, as Mazembe were denied a penalty in the fourth minute, although replay suggests there was contact made by Ngema on Bossu.

The first chance of the half arrived in the 20th minute, Manaka floated an inviting cross into the box for Mpho Makola, but the midfielder failed to keep his header on target.

Gallants should have went ahead in the 33rd minute, Edgar Manaka picked out Kgoetyana from a set-piece but the defender headed over from six-yards out.

That was as good as it got, as far chances were concerned, as Mazembe were quite content to sit back and let Gallants have the ball for most of the half.

While, it was a quiet opening 45 minutes for both goalkeepers, as neither had a save to make.

Mazembe came out much stronger in the second half and nearly went ahead in the 59th minute but Zola’s effort from distance was kept out by the woodwork.

The frame of the goal then denied Mazembe in the 64th minute, as Issama’s’s deflected effort off Ngema and crashed onto the crossbar.

Arubi came to Gallants’ rescue in the 83rd minute, the shot-stopper came off his line and pulled off a fine save to keep out Thomas Ulimwengu close range effort.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the closing stages, with Celimpilo Ngema going close once again but he fired into the side-netting.

Gallants is bowing out of Africa’s second-tier clubs competition after enjoying two back-to-back upsets against the more fancied Futuro Kings of Equatorial Guinea and AS Vita of DR Congo.
