Former 1500 meters world champion Elijah Manangoi has been banned for two-years for a doping offence.

Former 1500 meters world champion Elijah Manangoi has been banned for two-years for a doping offence.

Manangoi had been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) in July over the whereabouts failures.

The suspension of Manangoi, who is a close friend to suspended 2008 Olympic 1500 meter champion Asbel Kiprop, marked another blow for Kenyan athletics amid a series of anti-doping rule violations.

The AIU has now confirmed Korio will serve a two-year ban.

The middle distance runner was found to have missed a test on July 3 , 2019, with the second test coming on November 12, 2019.

Manangoi missed a third test on December 22, 2019 prompting AIU to impose a provision suspension to the 27-year-old runner.

Manangoi was granted an extension to provide a response to the charge, with his representative confirming he had accepted the rule violation on October 10, 2020.

“Disqualification of all competitive results obtained by the athlete since 22 December 2019 with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any  titles, awards, medals, points prizes and appearance money,” read the ruling from AIU.
