El Gaish Defeats Al Ahly On Penalties To Win Egyptian Super Cup

El Gaish defeated defending champions Al Ahly 3-2 on penalties at the Borg El Arab Stadium, on Tuesday night to win the Egyptian Super Cup.

This was El Gaish maiden Super Cup and first victory against Al Ahly, who created more chances during the match, in seven attempts.

In a game that proved to be a tight contest, ending 0-0 after regulation time and extra-time, El Gaish goalkeeper Mohamed Bassam came out as a hero as he saved three penalties.

Al Ahly got off to a great start when Mohamed Taher came close to scoring in the 10th minute. The experienced attacker fired in a low shot from just outside the box after he met a headed ball from Mohamed Sherif, following an excellent cross by Magdi Afsha.

It took El Gaish half an hour to get into the game, when Ahmed Abdel-Rahman hit a low shot at goal, but Mohamed El-Shenawy was equal to the task.

Al Ahly threw a punch of their own a little over the closing period of the first half with a smart shot from a decent area by Hussein El-Shahat before seeing a free-kick from a foul on Ayman Ashraf miss target.

El-Shahat entered clear on goal late in the half from a clever delivery, but was prevented from close-range and as a shot outside the area followed soon thereafter.

With both sides unchanged following the restart, El Gaish went inches close to the lead when a cross from Ahmed Samir trickled to El Shenawy  but the versatile player missed target.

More threats from the Army’s Vanguards followed, with Mido Gaber going on a mazy run only to be stopped, while Bassam smothered a free-kick by Mohamed Sherif at the other end.

Al Ahly threw numbers forward in the final ten minutes of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net hence pushing the match to extra time.
