Daniel Akpeyi: Nigerian Goalkeeper Joins Swallows On a Free Transfer

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has joined Moroka Swallows on a free transfer, Ducor Sports can reveal.

The 36-year-old has signed a six-month contract with the South Africa Premier Soccer League side months after leaving the Glamour Boys.

Akpeyi ran out of his contract with Chiefs this July last year and had since been awaiting a suitable offer.

The Nigerian international played 69 times for Kazier Chief since transferring from Chippa United in 2019.

He has been training with Swallows and became the first major signing for the club after the Beatufil Birds’ transfer ban was lifted by FIFA.

Swallows had been struggling immensely, and as they could not beef up their squad; as a result, they were languishing in the relegation zone.

They sit on position 14 on the DsTV Premiership log and are two points apart from Marumo Gallants, who anchor the league at the bottom.

The 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist is familiar with the South African league, where he has posted 52 clean sheets while conceding 142 goals.

He had previously been linked to another PSL side Sekhukhune where reports emerged that he had signed a one-year contract with the modest club with the option of another year.
