Chievo striker Ali Sowe Recalled to Gambia’s Squad After Three Years

Ali Sowe has earned a recall to the Gambia national team following a three-year absence. The Chievo Verona’s striker was included in gaffer Sang Ndong’s provisional 24-man squad that included five home-based players.

Sowe last featured internationally in 2013 in The Scorpions’ 2-0 defeat to Morocco and since then, he has been overlooked by previous coach Swiss-born Raoul Savoy, owing to the catalog of injuries he has suffered.

The 22-year-old has been on loan to seven different sides by parent club Chievo Verona of the Serie A to rake up playing time.

However, injuries halted his progress in until he hit the ground running this season, scoring six times in the league in eighteen starts for third-tier Italian side Vibonese.

Also comfortable playing on either wing, Sowe won’t have an easy break into Gambia’s attack that now comprises of Swansea’s Modou Barrow and Mustapha Carayol of Nottingham Forest.

Bubacarr Trawally (Yanbian Funde China), Lamin Jallow (Chievo Verona) and Yususpha Njie (FUS Rabat) are the other names he will have to compete with for a starting place.
