CHAN 2020: Nine Zimbabwe Players Test Positive For COVID-19

Nine members of Zimbabwe CHAN squad have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) said on Tuesday.

Nine members of Zimbabwe CHAN squad have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) said on Tuesday.

All the nine have been moved into quarantine and the team’s exemption to train while in isolation temporary revoked.

Zimbabwe are due to travel to Cameroon to participate in African Nations Championship (CHAN) that will take place from 16 January to 7 February 2021.

The 27-member squad had broke camp on December 20 for the Christmas Holidays and resumed training on Monday December 28 under coach Zdravko Logarusic.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) would like to inform the football fraternity and the nation at large that nine (9) players who are part of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) provisional squad have tested positive for Covid-19,” reads the statement.

“In adherence to our Covid-19 medical protocols, all players and members of the technical team were tested on Monday (28 December 2020) upon their return from festive break and the nine were ruled to have tested positive.

“All the affected players, ZIFA said, have been notified and quarantined in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) dictates. The players have also been advised to inform their families and contacts.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association has also informed the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) and the City Health Department for further guidance.”

Zimbabwe is in Group A and will face the hosts, Cameroon, in the tournament opener before facing Burkina Faso and Mali in other group matches.
