Cameroonian footballer James Piddy Ovidi died after collapsing during a game for his club Tonnerre Kalara club de Yaoundé.

Ovidi, 25, fell unconscious without any opposition around him at the time during a fitness match at Mfou Municipal Stadium, located 18 kilometres out of capital Yaounde.

According to media reports in Cameroon, Ovidi swallowed his tongue and passed away while on route to the hospital.

There were no medics at the pitch and it’s only his teammates who tried to provide some basic first aid procedure. For about twenty minutes they tried to insert a stick into his mouth and many other life-saving techniques.

Intervention by a medical person who lives near the stadium did not prevent the tragedy and now an autopsy is now being carried out to determine the cause of death.

News of his passing left his team-mates inconsolable as they learned of their tragic loss moments after his arrival at the hospital.

Sadly, Ovidi is not the only footballer to have suffered a tragic end this year while playing.

Nasarawa United’s Chieme Martins passed away in March after collapsing on the field during a Nigeria Professional League clash against Katsina United.
