Cameroonian Defender Delighted With Contract Extension

Cameroon international Ambroise Oyongo has expressed excitement after penning a new contract with French top-flight side Montpellier.

Cameroon international Ambroise Oyongo has expressed excitement after penning a new contract with French top-flight side Montpellier.

The former Montreal Impact defender’s contract with the La Paillade was due to expire next summer but he has been offered an extension despite making only three league appearances.

While Oyongo had been linked with a move to Monaco this mid-season and even expressed a desire to leave, the 28-year-old was persuaded to stay and has now pledged his future to Montpellier.

“I’m very happy to have extended my contract. It’s a show of trust from the club and I’ve got to repay them with good performance,” Oyongo told the club’s official website.

Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin on his part stated: “We are trying to keep our current squad together for next season and Ambroise is amongst the most important players of the team.”

Oyongo arrived in France from the Major Soccer League club Montreal at the start of the 2015 season, having begun his football career at Coton Sport in his native Cameroon, where he won three league titles between 2010 and 2014.

He had a brief spell with Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York Red Bulls in 2014, before switching to Montreal Impact in January 2015.

Capped 43 times by Cameroon scoring twice, Oyongo was part of Indomitable Lions squad that won their fifth African Cup of Nations title in Gabon two years ago.
